GPC (Graphite Petroleum Coke)

Graphite Petroleum Coke is a form of carbon that is produced  by graphitizing petroleum coke at a high temperature of about  3000°C. Graphite Petroleum Coke is used as a fuel, an anode for  steel and aluminum production, and a recarburizer for casting  and steelmaking.

Applications of GPC

  1. Steel making: It is used as a carburant when producing steel. during the process of steelmaking, it often is used to increase carbon content, it is helpful to improve strength and hardness of steel.
  2. Foundry casting: When cast iron and other metal castings, it’s often used as carburant. It is conductive to lessen the quantity of scrap metal needed and improve the quality of the castings.
  3. Friction materials: It is used as a filler when producing brake pads and other friction materials. Its main function is to improve the durability and performance of these materials.
  4. Batteries: It is used as an electrode material in lithium-ion batteries. It is conductive to improve the conductivity and capacity of the battery.
  5. Carbon brushes: It is used as a raw material when producing carbon brushes, it’s used in electric motors and generators to improve the conductivity and durability of  the brushes.
  6. Carbon products: GPC blocks are used as a raw material when producing electrodes for electric arc furnaces and other carbon-based goods.
  7. Chemical industry: GPC blocks are used as a raw material when producing various chemical compounds, for instance, carbon black and graphite electrodes.

How is Graphite Petroleum Coke different from regular  Petroleum Coke?

Graphite Petroleum Coke (GPC) and regular Petroleum Coke  (PC) are derived from oil refining buthave different properties  and uses.

  • GPC is produced by graphitizing PC at about 3000°C in a graphitization furnace, while PC is produced by coking residual oils at a temperature of more than 1500°C in a  coker unit.
  • GPC has a higher carbon content (over 80%) and lower sulfur and metal impurities than PC, which makes it suitable for producing anode coke for the aluminium and  steel industry.
  • GPC has a higher energy content and emits more carbon dioxide (CO2) than PC per unit of weight, which makes it more efficient but also more polluting as a fuel.
